We have the odd situation of someone who was just recalled from office running for that same office again a year later, with thrown-out former Alameda County DA Pamela Price announcing she’s running to be District Attorney again.
In her less than two years in office, Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price was a nonstop target of residents’ anger over what many saw as lenient plea deals for violent offenders, bizarre personal spats with individual judges, and the bad optics of hiring her romantic partner for a $115,000-a-year job that was not publicly posted. (Governor Gavin Newsom was not thrilled with her performance either.)
So, angry Alameda County residents started trying to recall her a mere eight months into her term, culminating in last November's recall of Price by a pretty overwhelming 63%-37% margin.
Since then, Price has pretty much ridden off into the sunset, or rather, she’s been podcasting and Substacking. But Price apparently feels the time is right for her political comeback, as KTVU reports that Pamela Price is running for Alameda County DA again, barely a year after being recalled from office.
"Gun violence in Alameda County continues to surge, and too many families are grieving losses that should never have happened. I am fighting for real solutions that stop the shootings, strengthen prevention efforts, and protect every neighborhood in this county,” Price said in a press release announcing her candidacy. “As someone who survived the juvenile justice and foster care system, I carry the truth of those experiences with me. I have made it my life’s mission to confront youth violence and juvenile crime head on and to drive down recidivism by giving young people real paths forward instead of letting the system write them off."
Price planned to formally announce her candidacy at a noon press conference Thursday at New Bethel Community Church in Hayward. She’ll be running against the current appointed Alameda County DA Ursula Jones Dickson.
There’s still plenty of bad political baggage swirling around Price, aside from the whole ‘You just got overwhelmingly recalled’ thing. She’s been dogged by multiple allegations that she tried to trade lighter sentences for political donations while in office, sometimes to the tune of as much as $25,000. Those matters would surely come up again in any campaign.
You’ve got to admit, it takes chutzpah to run for an office that you just got recalled from by a rather staggering margin. But Price is apparently full speed ahead that she is doing this, and if you care to watch, the KTVU website will be carrying Price’s 12 pm press conference today live.
